Coronary Angioplasty/Stenting

Coronary angioplasty is used to treat heart disease caused by a blockage or narrowing of the heart vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle. Coronary angioplasty which usually takes one to two hours is aimed at removing or reducing the blockage of the coronary arteries and restoring normal blood supply to the heart muscle. Coronary angioplasty is performed in a specialized X-ray operating room.

All cardiology hospitals, as well as most of the multidisciplinary hospitals in India, are equipped with such an X-ray operating room and perform coronary angioplasty at the highest level.

Coronary angioplasty is performed in patients with coronary heart disease to expand the lumen of the vessel and normalize the nutrition of the heart muscle. Angioplasty performed immediately after a myocardial infarction can unblock clogged arteries and minimize damage to the heart muscle.

Indian cardiac surgeons are highly experienced in performing coronary angioplasty given the large number of coronary artery disease patients in India. A huge flow of cardiac patients allows this procedure to be carried out with a high degree of efficiency and to ensure its low cost.

Coronary angioplasty is always preceded by coronary angiography. In an angiogram an interventional cardiologist inserts a thin catheter into a blood vessel in the groin or wrist and then guides it to the heart where it injects a radiopaque agent while taking a series of x-rays. Based on the resulting images, a decision is made about which surgical intervention - stenting or coronary artery bypass grafting - is required.
