A liver transplant is a surgical procedure to replace a diseased liver with a healthy liver from a health person. In this procedure a whole liver may be transplanted or just a part of it. The donated organ or liver most probably come from a donor who has just died or a living person can also donate a part of his liver. A donor can be a family member or any other person who is not related to you but his or her blood type is a good match for you.

What does a liver do in a human body?

A liver is the largest solid organ in the body which filters all of the blood in the body and breaks down poisonous substances, such as alcohol and drugs. It also produces bile, a fluid that helps digest fats and carries away wastes and performs over 500 vital functions.

Who can be a donor?

To be a donor for a liver transplant there are some conditions:

  • A donor must be age of 18-55
  • Must weigh 50-85KG
  • Must be a family member or relative (parent, spouse, child or sibling)
  • Ready to giver voluntary consent of donation
  • Must be a healthy person with normal liver function
