Kidney Transplant

The kidney is the most common organ needed for transplantation. When the kidneys aren't working properly, it has serious effects throughout the body. Diabetes or high blood pressure are the most common causes of kidney damage. In severe cases, the function of the kidneys must be replaced either by blood dialysis or the transplantation of a donor kidney.

Kidney transplant is a surgical procedure aimed at replacing a renal patient with a healthy kidney from a donor. The kidney may come from a deceased organ donor or a living donor. Family members or other persons who are a suitable match may donate one of their kidneys. This type of transplant is called a living transplant. People who donate their kidney donors can live a healthy life with one healthy kidney.

The person who is getting a kidney transplant done most often receives only one kidney. In rare cases, he or she can get two kidneys from a deceased donor. The affected kidneys are usually left in place. The transplanted kidney is placed in the lower abdomen on the front of the body.

Tasks of the kidney

The kidneys are a pair of organs located below the diaphragm on either side of the spine. In an adult, it weighs 120 to 300 grams. More than a liter of blood flows through the kidneys within a minute. This very high blood flow rate is necessary for the clearing and filtering function of the kidneys:

  • The kidneys remove endogenous waste products that are no longer needed and exogenous substances (e.g. medicines) from the blood and excrete them.
  • They are involved in the regulation of water and electrolyte balance in the body.
  • They form various hormones that are important for blood pressure, blood formation and bone metabolism (renin, erythropoietin and calcitriol). Share this post
