Knee Replacement Surgery is also referred as knee arthroplasty is a surgical procedure involves cutting away damaged bone and cartilage from your thighbone, shinbone and kneecap and replacing it with an artificial joint or an implant.
The knee joint functions normally when the movement of one bone relative to another occurs smoothly, without friction. A healthy knee joint has a smooth cartilage surface on all bones. Cartilage performs a cushioning action when the bones are in motion. The other surfaces of the knee joint are lined with tissue - the synovial membrane - that produces a lubricating joint fluid that is absolutely essential for the proper functioning of the knee joint.
The most common reason of knee replacement is severe pain in knee joint caused by arthritis
- Osteoarthritis - This condition is more often due to age-related changes and occurs after 50 years, more often it is hereditary. In this case, the articular cartilage becomes thinner, which leads to friction of the bones during movement and the appearance of pain.
- Rheumatoid arthritis - This condition is caused by inflammation of the synovial membrane that produces the lubricating joint fluid, causing the articular cartilage to break down and leading to pain and stiffness in the joints.
- Arthritis due to fracture/trauma - Trauma to the joint or severe damage to the ligamentous apparatus of the joint can cause cartilage destruction.
